Remember the other day, Mr. C had a friend over for
BUG DAY?
Well I wanted to continue our little theme and make another craft with the kids.
Our family was fortunate to get out of the heat this weekend and go camping in the cool pines for a family reunion. I took along this book (I finally went out and bought it), and some items to make our coffee filter butterflies.
After reading the book to the kids, I got out all the supplies we would need:
coffee filters
clothes pins
craft glue
pom poms
markers
spray bottle
I couldn't do this project without my eager little helpers!
First I let the kids color their coffee filters with markers. I didn't use washable markers so I don't know how those would work for this craft. The markers bleed through the coffee filters pretty easily so make sure you are doing this on a table that is ok to get a little marked up!
After the kids have colored the filters, use a spray bottle of water and spray the filters and watch the colors bleed together (the more color on the filters the better the final product, like the ones in the first picture). This is really messy and I was glad I was outside when I did it. The colors not only bleed through and all over the table, they were dripping off onto the ground too.
While waiting for our filters to dry (didn't take very long at all), we made our butterfly bodies. Using our pom poms, I put a dot of glue on one side and then the kids pushed them down onto the clothes pins.
Of course we needed to have a little snack as we waited for everything to dry!
Once the filters were dry, I scrunched up the middle of the filter and then opened my clothes pins and clamped down on the place that I had scrunched up.
They turned out really cute and not only did my little kids like making these, but my niece and nephew who are 8, their finished butterflies are the first picture, loved making them too!
This was a fairly inexpensive and fun craft. Perfect for our camping weekend!
